Business is easier when people know the rules
We know policy seems pretty boring and is usually one of those tasks that is last on the ‘to do’ list when you are an employer. Well, we’re here to tell you, by goodness you better sort yours out! Depending on your industry, there are specific policies you should have in place that are not covered by your employment agreements.
The benefits of having good Company policies in place include:
- Something to fall back on, in conjunction with your employment agreements when things aren’t going right
- A way to spell out expectations of your employees and of you as an employer
- A good way to keep up with industry standards
- Keeping up with legislative requirements
- Being transparent should you be audited
Policy allows you some flexibility to change the way you do things in your business, to lay down some rules and expectations so you can all get on with what you need doing. Policy and procedures allow you to fill in the gaps that are not covered by your agreements.
Some potholes to avoid
If you are going to implement policy, take time to ensure it doesn’t contradict your employment agreements and also ensure your employment agreements refer to your policy. Ensure your policy requirements are actually within the scope of what you can reasonably expect from your employees and ensure you stick to them!
